Guest Post: My Top 8

I was supposed to write an open letter to TNA, but I’m having a problem of organizing my thoughts. Mainly because there’s so much to say due to my frustration level being so high and I want to keep the letter PG. Since I told Kevin I’d have a blog for him, I decided to write a placeholder. The problem was figuring out a topic. Since I couldn’t think of anything really interesting, I decided to do a top 10 list. So without further ado,

Top 8 Matches I Saw In Person

This list was quickly thrown together. Basically I tried to pick one match from every different promotion I’ve seen seen live.

8. Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy/Allison Danger vs. Larry Sweeney, Roarshach, Sharecropper. Chikara: Speaking in Tongues, Reading, PA 2005

Back in 2005, I discovered Chikara when they were promoting their Tag Team World Grand Prix tournament. I was quickly hooked on the wackiness of the promotion. After seeing a few shows, I knew I had to witness this spectacle in person. As fate would have it, my original vacation plans got cancelled so I found myself with a week off from work at the same time Chikara was running their monthly shows. I made the 15 hour drive from Herrin, IL to Reading, PA by myself eagerly anticipating what I was going to see. Chikara had only been around for 2 or 3 years at this time and hadn’t yet built much of a fan base. I think there were maybe 25 fans in attendance.
The show was everything I hoped for. I chose this match simply because it has my favorite female wrestler, Allison Danger and the greatest wrestler of the 2000’s “Sweet and Sour” Larry Sweeney. WWE fans may remember Sweeney from his appearance on Raw portraying Nick Hogan during the buildup to the Hulk Hogan/Randy Orton match at SummerSlam. Hoping we’ll see the return of
Sweet and Sour International in two aught one one.

7. Rickey Reyes vs Delirious vs Flash Flanigan vs Shane Hagadorn, ROH: Supercard of
Honor, Chicago, IL 2006

Wrestlemania 22 was the first Geek Weekend for Kevin and me. Part of the weekend festivities was a Ring of Honor show. This match wasn’t anything special, and if I was being honest, the Necro Butcher/Samoa Joe brawl later in the show was more entertaining. But this match makes the list simply because of the post match beat down Delirious received from Rickey Reyes.

I am a huge Delirious mark and have a homemade Delirious mask. Reyes was beating Delirious up screaming that Delirious didn’t belong in ROH and was nothing but a joke. Kevin and I were in the third row. I was wearing my mask and booing Reyes. Reyes continued his verbal smackdown, looked in my direction and said something along the lines of, “you’re not wanted here. No one likes you. And that &*&$#* right there doesn’t mean $#&@!” Kevin said that was worth the price of admission alone.

6. Ric Flair vs Harley Race. Pittsfield, IL 1983 or ‘84
This was the main event of the first ever live show I attended. I don’t remember what organization put on the show. Don’t remember who fought on the undercard. And as you can see, don’t really remember what year it was. But I remember Ric Flair being Ric Flair and making me a fan for life. Harley Race was no slouch either.

5. AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Chris Saban vs Petey Williams, IWA:Mid-South, Autumn Armageddon, Evansville, IN 2004

Much like the Chikara show, this was my first introduction to IWA: Mid-South and there were probably only 30-40 fans in attendance. Looking back, this entire show would be a solid PPV offering. I think only 3 or 4 of the guys who wrestled haven’t gone on to be major players on the Indy or National scene. This match was originally a #1 contender’s match, but Champion Arik Cannon suffered a broken collarbone in the match prior so this became a title match.

4. Masato Tanaka vs Mike Awesome, ECW: Heatwave ’98, Dayton, OH

Hands down, the best show I’ve attended. It was hard to pick a match from this show because any match could be on the list. Chose this one simply because of the beating both men delivered. Tanaka power bombing Awesome over the top rope through a table was insane.

3. Chris Hero vs Human Tornado, PWG: Life During Wartime, Reseda, CA 2008
A wild and crazy cage match. The Reseda Legion Hall is so small, they had the fans exit the building while the cage was set up so there would be no chance of someone getting injured. During the match, Claudio Castagnoli and Necro Butcher did run ins. Claudio to try and help Tornado. Necro to chase Claudio out of the building. A few minutes after chasing Claudio out of the building, Necro came back in through the main door and watched the rest of the match from the crowd talking to fans about
the match.

2. Syxx vs Eddie Guerrero, NWO: Souled Out, Cedar Rapids, IA 1997

It was either this or Rey Mysterio Jr./ Jushin Thunder Liger from Starrcade 1996. Went with this one because the coin landed on heads. A motivated Syxx and a rising star in Eddie Guerrero. What more needs to be said. Probably a lot, but it’s late and I’m tired.

Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair

1. Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels, WWE: Wrestlemania 24, Orlando, FL 2008
I said earlier, Ric Flair made me a fan for life. Seeing his “retirement” match was an emotional event. While the match outcome was never in doubt, Ric and Shawn told a story through ring psychology that is often missing in most of today’s wrestling matches. While I wish Ric would have stayed retired, I don’t think Ric is made to simply sit at home and watch wrestling on television. He has to be a part of the show.

There you have it. The top 8 matches I came up with in 5 minutes. Now back to that letter to TNA.

Hall of Fame Heartbreak

The Hall of Fame is one of my favorite parts of Wrestlemania weekend. It's a great time to see some of the old timers come back and talk about things way back when. Luckily, my friend Chad and I have been able to attend the last several ceremonies.
And we'll be back this year. When I heard last night that they'd be announcing the first inducted in the Class of 2011, I figured they'd be going for someone big to attract a big crowd, as tickets go on sale Saturday. Then when the "King" said at the beginning of Raw that it was one of the greatest superstars of all time, I figured it would be have to be someone huge.

I think the WWE delivered with the announcement that Shawn Michaels is going in this year. I'll admit I was surprised. I had figured (based mostly on the online rumors) that it would be someone from WCW. Perhaps Goldberg or Lex Luger or even the elusive Sting.

My first reaction was also semi disappointment. And not because I don't think Shawn has a spot in the Hall of Fame. I've written before about the length of time a performer is done in the ring to the time they're inducted. I guess there are no real rules here, as we saw Ric Flair get inducted the night BEFORE his "last" match.

Saying good bye after Wrestlemania 26

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for it to be Shawn. He is still fresh in the minds of fans. Did you hear how they popped when he came out? I think he'll definitely put "asses in the seats." I also came to realize today that I've been there for some of Shawn's biggest matches. At least the ones of the "second half" of his career. We were at Wrestlemania 24 for his match against Flair. Then at Wrestlemania 25 his first attempt to end the Undertaker's streak. And finally at Wrestlemania 26, Shawn's final match.

I'd also like to mention that I was at the first Hell in the Cell encounter between 'Taker and HBK back in 1997. It was the In Your House: Badd (yes two D's) Blood pay per view in St. Louis.

So Shawn deserves to be in the hall, no doubt. Even when he left the first time in 1998, I think he'd accomplished more than enough to be inducted. The second time around he raised the bar and solidified his legacy. While the mark in me was hoping that this year's "1st Ballot" choice would have been "Macho Man" Randy Savage, I'm glad Shawn is getting inducted and can't wait to hear his speech in Atlanta.

Genesis Recap

I didn't have a chance to watch TNA's Genesis last night. But my friend and tag team partner Chad did. Here's his recap.

I asked Kevin for this space so I could write an open letter to TNA. If you’ve watched the videos we shot recently on My 1-2-3 Cents on YouTube then you’ve heard a few of my thoughts on TNA. After last night’s Genesis Pay Per View, I have come to a point where I feel I need TNA and I need a trial separation. Before I get to the open letter, let me run down the events of the Genesis to get you up to
speed on the happenings in TNA land and throw in some commentary hinting at my frustration with TNA.

The show started with an X division title match where Jay Lethal lost the title to Fortune/Immortal member Kazarian. From a wrestling viewpoint, this was a good match and a logical choice to open the show as it served to offer up Total Nonstop Action working the crowd into a frenzy. In typical TNA title match fashion, the referee got knocked down allowing KAZ to hit an illegal move which lead to him capturing the X Division title. Beyond the unnecessary ref bump, Jay Lethal won the X division
title about 3 weeks ago after losing it to Robbie E about 3-4 weeks prior. The ping ponging of titles prevents them from mattering because no champion gets to establish themselves as champ. The title change also served as the first chapter in Immortal’s goal to capture all the titles.

After the match they showed Ric Flair and AJ Styles in Eric Bischoff’s office. Flair is explaining AJ being injured and thus not able to compete in his TV title match later in the show. Bischoff scolds AJ for getting injured and says Hulk Hogan had sacrificed so much over the past year it led to him having a ten hour back surgery. One of the points Kevin and I made in our video was how AJ, who should be the cornerstone of the company, is constantly made to look like a nobody. That continued tonight as he was made to look inferior to a 56 year old broken down ex-superstar.

Mickie James failed to capture the Knockouts title from Madison Rayne. Have to give TNA credit as Mickie has been in the company for four months and hasn’t been given a title yet. Of course the match had the TNA patented Championship Match Run In as Tara tried to interfere, distracting the ref long enough for Madison to hit Mickie with a loaded glove for the KO pin.

The next backstage interview saw Christie Hemme interviewing Fortune/Immortal members, KAZ, Beer Money, Flair and Bischoff. I tried to understand why they are members of both Fortune/Immortal, but couldn’t come up with a good reason. Beer Money says they’re taking back the tag titles. Bischoff says Rob Van Dam’s opponent will remain a mystery until the match.

Beer Money made good on their promise to win back the Tag Titles from the Motor City Machine Guns. This was as good of a match as would be expected from the two teams. However it suffered from two major flaws. One, the Guns have not been built up as dominant champs compared to Beer Money. Instead, they come off as temporary champions who were only holding the belts until it was time for Beer Money to take them back. Two, with the storyline of Fortune going for all the belts, it was a pretty foregone conclusion Beer Money would win.

The former Dudley Boys, now Team 3D fought each other. I went to do laundry instead of watching two guys who’s act grew stale eight years ago.

Douglas Williams defended the TV title against Abyss, subbing for AJ Styles. Much like the Tag Title match, the Fortune title hunt storyline killed any suspense to the match. Abyss wins after AJ ran in and hit Douglas with the title behind the ref’s back.

Backstage RVD confronts Bischoff about his mystery opponent. RVD says the only person he wants in the ring is Hardy. Not Jeff Hardy, just Hardy. Bischoff says if he wants Hardy, he’ll get Hardy.

RVD goes to the ring for his match expecting Jeff Hardy, but instead he gets the debuting Matt Hardy. The match wasn’t terrible for Matt still looking out of shape and having not wrestled in four months. Matt scores the win after pinning RVD while RVD’s leg was under the rope and the ref didn’t see it.

Jeff Jarrett and Kurt Angle had an MMA exhibition match. When I ordered the show, I thought I was ordering a wrestling show, not an MMA show. Yes, I know the match was promoted for the last month and I knew it’d be on the show. My point is, I’m watching a wrestling show because I want to watch wrestling. If I want to see MMA I’ll watch UFC.

Jeff Hardy gave his thoughts on the upcoming #1 contenders match between Matt Morgan and Mr. Anderson. You’d think at some point either Jeff would mention, or Christy would bring up Matt Hardy being in TNA. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong.

Morgan and Anderson had an okay match, I guess. I was busy folding laundry. Anderson wins and then Bischoff tells Anderson he gets his title match now. Jeff Hardy takes his time getting into the ring thinking Anderson is already beat up and will be easy pickings. That’s not the case and Jeff and Anderson go on to have about a 15 minute match. During the match, Matt Morgan kicks Jeff Hardy in the face when the ref isn’t looking. Jeff tries to use a chair on Anderson only to have Mick
Foley come out and take the chair away leading to Ric Flair coming out and getting in Foley’s face. Then Matt Hardy comes out to help Jeff, but RVD comes out to stop Matt. And then Bischoff goes to use a chair on Anderson, but Anderson blocks it, hits his finishing move on Bischoff and then hits the move on Jeff putting him down for the three count to become new TNA champ. A TNA title match with six people getting involved before the match is over. That may be a new TNA record. Fortune won all the belts they didn’t have and lost the one they did have going into the show.

During the show , I was a bit annoyed that all the title matches were happening before the #1 contender’s match. Without a World Title match on the show, it would have been a good time to present another title as being prestigious. After the show I understand why they saved the #1 contender match for last. Taking the belt off of Jeff Hardy was an interesting move given the storyline of Fortune aiming for all the titles. After the loss, it occurred to me that TNA is taping the next month of
Impacts this week and Jeff Hardy is going to court on January 20 to plead guilty on a litany of drug charges. Taking the strap off him at Genesis prevents them from a media attack of questions should he be sentenced to any serious jail time. You know what would have been a better idea? NOT PUTTING YOUR TITLE ON A GUY WHO’S FACING MULTIPLE COUNTS OF DRUG POSSESSION!!!! It’s not like he was arrested after becoming champion. He was busted three months prior to signing a TNA contract.

Anyway. That’s the happenings from the Pay Per View. I’ll be back with the open letter to TNA.

The Buzz on Sting

Pardon the pun in the headline, but there has been a lot of buzz on Sting heading to the WWE, just in time for Wrestlemania and the Hall of Fame.

Personally, I'd love to see this happen. If you're a fan of wrestling, you already know Sting is the only modern day legend out there who NEVER wrestled in the WWE. Admittedly Sting's best years are behind him, but I think it would be great to see him with a brief run with the E.

From all the reports I've seen online, Sting is no longer under contract with TNA, although his photo is still on the company's website. I've also read that because Wrestlemania is in Atlanta (the home of WCW) this year, Vince McMahon really wants the former WCW & TNA world champion to sign with his company.

It would be strange seeing him in a WWE ring though. If he did sign, I have to wonder how long would he stick around? I know he's not a fan of the grueling WWE schedule. I can't imagine if he inks a deal it would be for a long term contract. I wouldn't expect to see a world title run either. Would they use him to put guys over? Who would his opponents be? I could see a few big matches on pay per view and some appearances on Raw. Edge is standing out in my head at the moment as a great opponent for the Stinger.

Let's be honest, the WWE needs a big name for the Hall of Fame this year. Each year they try to feature a main eventer if you will. Last year, I felt like they were missing that piece of the puzzle. Don't get me wrong, I love the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, but I think they needed a bigger name than him. For that reason I was disappointed we didn't get Macho Man Randy Savage or the Ultimate Warrior.

This year there is talk of Ron Simmons and Arn Anderson so far. Sting would definitely be the "must have" if we're going with a WCW theme this year. I suppose we'll know soon enough. But we can pretty much be sure that if Sting does decide to resign with TNA, we won't be seeing him in the Hall of Fame anytime soon.

Since I may be heading back to Mania this year, I really would like to see him with the E and going into the HOF. Or even just wrestling at Mania. I haven't seen him wrestle live in 20 years (Starrcade 90). And here's a long shot, if he does come to the WWE, I'd like to see him back as the beach bum Sting. I always liked that look and gimmick over the crow version. But I think I'd be in the minority there.

He's Got Spirit

Dolph Ziggler is making the most of the new year. Just five years ago he was kicking and jumping and cheering as a member of the Spirit Squad. Today, he's the number 1 contender to the World Heavyweight championship.

On the same night he lost the Intercontinental title to Kofi Kingston, Dolph won a fatal four way to become Edge's next opponent.

It's an interesting choice. But a good one I think. The WWE is in desperate need of fresh blood in the main event, especially on Smackdown! I personally would have gone with Drew McIntyre if they were looking for a heel to go head to head with Edge. But I support Dolph. I think he's come a long way.

His recent matches with Daniel Bryan, Kaval, and John Cena have been good. He's proving he's more than just a former member of the Spirit Squad. Who thought he'd be the one still around and now in the World title picture? I always thought Kenny had the most potential...

My guess is just like John Morrison, Dolph will not be winning the gold belt anytime soon. While it's good that we're getting fresh world title matches, these recently elevated guys still have a long way to go before the belt goes around their waist. I hope they don't just hot shot this one like they did the Miz and Morrison last week on Raw. They could actually do a little buildup here to the Royal Rumble.

Dolph, McIntrye, Cody Rhodes, and Alberto Del Rio are the four heels I see making an impact (pardon the expression) on Smackdown! this year. Del Rio seems to be the one who's getting a lot of buzz, so don't be surprised to see him in the title hunt or wearing the belt by SummerSlam.

I think now that the E is pushing some guys they haven't before they need to work on developing them and keeping them on the top of the card. (Insert Jack Swagger memory here)

Flashback Friday: Thunder (No Lightning)

The late 1990's served as a boom for the wrestling business. In 1995, Eric Bischoff who was leading the charge for WCW started the so called Monday Night Wars when he and others within the Turner company created Monday Nitro to compete with the WWF's Monday Night Raw.

After much success with that formula and a growing talent pool, it was time to expand. WCW would launch "Thursday Night Thunder" in January 1998. The first episode aired on January 8th of that year. It's live format offered fans another two hours of wrestling action each week.

Probably the biggest shocker (no pun intended) from that first episode was "Gentleman" Chris Adams pinning "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Of course, there was interference from Lex Luger that night, and the decision was eventually reversed.

The show stayed on the air through the Monday Night Wars which also became Thursday Night Wars when WWE added Smackdown! to its schedule. I think when the E took the upper hand in the war, WCW executives moved Thunder to Wednesday nights. It stayed on air until WWE bought the company in 2001.

I wasn't a regular Thunder watcher, but I did check out the show. About 3 weeks into the show, I actually attended a live edition in Hunstville, Alabama. I was a young reporter at the time working in nearby Florence. Because of my job, I was able to get a media pass and interview several of the stars of the day.

Buff Bagwell, Goldberg, Ray Traylor, and Bobby "the Brain" Heenan all joined me for a few minutes to talk. It was a very memorable experience. You can see the clips on My 1-2-3 Cents on YouTube.

That night was interesting, because when we arrived at the arena in Huntsville we were greeted by the WCW staff. They were all very nice to us. Then they brought over our first interview, Goldberg.
The interview wasn't very eventful though. Goldberg had just started with his winning streak. This was still about 3 months before he was red hot.

Then there was a lull in the activity. There were 3 other TV stations there at the time, and the wrestlers were just hitting us one at a time. So in the downtime, I decided to shoot some video of the ring as the crew was setting it up. This turned out to be a huge mistake. Doug Dillinger, who was WCW's security guy (sorry I don't remember his exact title), approached me and asked what I was doing. I told him getting "b-roll" (video) to go along with the story. He proceeded to yell at me and tell me I had no right getting shots of the ring. Keep in mind NO ONE said getting video of the ring was off limits. Then he demanded my tape. I assured him that I would not use the material, and I didn't want to give him my tape because my interview with Goldberg was on there. He insisted and took the tape and said they'd erase only the footage of the ring and "try" to save the interview.

Dillinger gave me the tape back a short time later, but the interview with Goldberg was gone. I was disappointed by that. The only thing I can think that set him off was the fact that the Giant (aka the Big Show) destroyed the ring that night as the Outsiders stood inside it. My guess is that the crew was rigging it to make it collapse easier. I didn't have a problem with being told not to shoot the ring, but the way Dillinger came at me, yelling and embarrassing me in front of everyone else indicated to me that he's a class a douche.

The rest of the night went well. The interviews were entertaining, especially the Bagwell and Heenan ones. I was young and nervous and trying not to mark out the whole time.

Those are my memories of Thunder, which entered our world 13 years ago this week.
